Cycling season

To get right into spring cycling season, the first priority is finding a great bike for both sport and transportation. In the US, May is national bike month, a time when we are supposed to get more familiar with our bicycles. Kansas City has nine tips on getting your bike, and you body, ready for cycling season. The start of the season is a good time to replace tires, cyclists should clean and lube the cables, and lube the chains. Bike techs recommend regularly checking your brake pads to make sure they aren't worn too low or encrusted with particles of metal from the wheel's rim.

Previous research has found that competitive cyclists have significantly lower bone mineral density (BMD) than other endurance athletes, making them more susceptible to fractures. Increased bone breakdown is one cause for low BMD among cyclists, due to inadequate energy intake relative to expenditure. Other factors include low-body weight, increased loss of calcium through sweat, and the fact that cycling exerts only minimal pressure on the bones. Even walking is better than cycling where bone strength is concerned.
