53-year old Martina Navratilova, tennis ace and winner of a record nine Wimbledon singles titles, has been diagnosed with
breast cancer. A mammogram revealed that she had cancerous cells in her left breast. "The biggest shock was the loss of control. I'm an athlete, and I've taken great care of my body over the years, I've kept myself in good shape, but this made me realise that you don't have control over your body and your life. Some things are uncontrollable, and that's shocking," Navratilova, 53, said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

In all, she has a portfolio of 59 grand slam titles, including 18 singles trophies. And she is taking a typically gutsy attitude to her cancer treatment. "I'm not one to stay in the problem for long, and almost straight away I wanted to know what I could be doing about it," Navratilova said. She has remained active, continuing to hit tennis balls, play hockey and compete in triathlons.
