Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso

Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso, who have been friends and each others competition since they were teenage girls, did America proud at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Lindsey Vonn raised the American flag in triumph after winning the gold medal in the women’s downhill race in Vancouver yesterday; Julia Mancuso was a surprise second and took the silver for America. Elisabeth Goergl of Austria took the bronze medal, 1.46 seconds behind Vonn. Lindsey is the first American woman to win the Olympic downhill; and with Julia Mancuso taking silver this happens to be the third time Americans have finished 1-2 in an Olympic Alpine race, and the first time in 26 years.

An injured Vonn (above left) did not attend the Winter Olympics opening ceremony, fearing that the hours of walking and standing with her teammates might aggravate the injured leg. Funnily enough Mancuso (right) almost didn't make it to the ceremony, missing the first athletes’ bus because she was playing Dance Dance Revolution at the Olympic Village!!!
