Dinara Safina number one

Women's world number one Dinara Safina beat Danish teenager Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 on Sunday to win her second major clay title, the Madrid Masters. Early this year Dinara was crushed by Serena Williams in the Australian Open; the 23-year-old Russian had also lost the 2008 Roland Garros final to Ana Ivanovic. But with this win Dinara Safina (below right) showed she is on track as a serious title contender when the French Open gets underway in a week. "I was getting a bit tired by the end," said Safina. "But I dominated at the crucial times. I was very dominant in the first set. In the second I had a chance at a double-break."

Meanwhile Roger Federer (above left) beat Spainiard and close rival Rafael Nadal 6-4 6-4 to win the men's trophy. Federer has not beaten Nadal on clay since Nadal defeated him in the final of 2007's Hamburg masters.

Dinara Safina clothes

The 5'11.5" Dinara says she's aware of her good looks but, "I'm not one to put on layers of makeup before I go out on court. Of course, I don't want to look bad, but the first thing I'm thinking about on court is tennis." While the other tennis babes are using their fame to earn money through sponsorship, modeling, and wearing fashion brands, Safina says, "I have no favorite brand and no favorite designer. I simply wear clothes that suit me. I just want to feel good."
