Elena Dementieva lost in the semi-finals to Serena Williams; before this match Elena had beaten Serena consecutively in their last four matches. Elena lost 6-3, 6-4 to Serena, ending all speculation of an all-Russian final. The Dementieva win at the Sydney International earlier this month was over compatriot and good friend Dinara Safina.
Dinara Safina beat fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 7-6 in the other semi-finals. Dinara now faces Serena Williams in the final.....which of these tennis babes is going down next?
Results of the 2009 Australian Open
Serena Williams beat Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-3 in the women's final in less than one hour. "I played really like a junior; it's sad what I did today," Said Dinara Safina at the post-match press conference.
The men's final was more competitive going for the full five hard-fought sets. Rafael Nadal became the first Spaniard to win the Australian Open, by beating Roger Federer 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2. The men's final went on for 4 hours and 23 minutes! At the end an emotional Roger Federer, stopped short of beating Pete Sampras' record of 14 major titles and toppled from his No. 1 slot, was consoled by Rafael Nadal:
