Ronaldo had a magnificent 2007/08 season, scoring 42 goals for Manchester United, and capturing the Premier League, Champions League and European Golden Boot. The winger also helped make his side, Manchester United Club World Champions in Yokohama, Japan last month.
The 23-year-old Cristiano becomes the first player from England's Premier League to be named FIFA World Player of the Year, and only the second Portuguese, following in the footsteps of Luis Figo, who triumphed in 2001. Cristiano Ronaldo has previously also picked up the prestigious Ballon d'Or (European Footballer of the Year) and World Soccer magazine's player of the year award.
"It is an overwhelming moment, a very special moment in my life," the new World Player of the Year said. "I would like to say to my mother and sister that the fireworks can be fired off now."
